Some Stuff About Me:

Turn the Radio On

My morning "talk" DJ disappeared after a long stint in Tampa... leaving the morning show in 2012 in order to just do his nationally syndicated political talk show in the afternoon.  He had been on the air almost 7 hours a day before he finally made this difficult decision.

I went into withdrawal...he did a little shock, a whole lot of funny, and both local and national vignettes in the morning hour, with a raucous crew.  I started listening to him in 1996, so it felt as though an old friend disappeared.

I went to I-Pod and CD's in the car after that, but I really craved the talk.  Started trying to find a new FM station that had local flavor and narrowed it down to 2.  The one I listen to most, I listen to because the guy in charge, Orlando...has a real gift.  However, he plays rap-pop, and lately I have found myself humming tunes in the middle of the day that have words in them like:

    "gangsta"      and  "popping tags"

That can't go on.  I'm in human resources.

The most likely candidate for a show is the one that replaced my old radio personality.  I don't mind the guy in charge... but unfortunately, it is a Top 40 musical format.  You know what I hate about top 40?  There are always a couple of songs I like, and then the station kills them by playing them about 5 or 6 times an hour.

One such tune, that I truly love (I would input the You Tube...but am not at my own computer...which broke down; and I can't access the You Tube site from here -- if you do watch it, catch the version that was done live for a show called "Star Academy", which is for a French audience) is from a guy is who is really a talented song writer; a ballad.  He's had quite a few hits that are ballads (which is sort of a dying art form).  The words:

Bruno Mars..... "When I Was Your Man"

"When I Was Your Man"
Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ohh…
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man

Kind of a heart breaker... (I'm a little blue today) but just done beautifully.  If you haven't heard it, try to catch it before Top 40 radio plays it 300,000 times in the month of March.

Plagiarizing my own stuff

Eagles.............................Plagiarized from my Yahoo Blog

I'm getting to the point where I can sing almost all the words in the car to the Eagles "Long Road Out of Eden". I'm focused on the lyrical poetry of Don Henley's "Waiting in the "Weeds" right now. I like it again now, because it's the end of August, just like the song. It's a love-gone-wrong song, something that the Eagles are so good at. And man, that harmony. But the word poetry is stunning; and so, here it is for you, too:

WAITING IN THE WEEDS

It's comin' on the end of August

Another Summer's promise almost gone

And though I heard some wise man say

That every dog will have his day

He never mentioned that these dog days get so long.

~~~~
I don't know when I realized the dream was over
There was no particular hour, no given day
You know, it didn't go down in flame
There was no final scene, no frozen frame
I just watched it slowly fade away.
~~~~

And I've been waiting in the weeds --waiting for my time to come around again

Hope is floating on the breeze, carrying my soul high up above the ground

I've been keepin' to myself,

Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing you

And though you're with somebody else

He'll never love you like I do.

~~~~~
I've been biding time with crows and sparrows while peacocks prance and strut upon the stage
If finding love is just a dance -- proximity and chance
You will excuse me if I skip the masquerade.
~~~~

And I've been waiting in the weeds -- waiting for the dust to settle down along the backroads

Running through the fields, lying on the outskirts of this lonesome town

And I imagine sunlight in your hair

You're at the county fair -- you're holding hands and laughing

And now, the ferris wheel has stopped

You're swinging on the top, suspended there with him

And he's the darling of the chic

The flavor of the week is melting down your pretty summer dress

Baby, what a mess you're making.

I've been stumbling through some dark places, but I'm following the plow

I know I've fallen out of your good graces, but it's all right now.

~~~~
I've been waiting in the weeds -- waiting for the summer rain to fall
Upon the wild birds scattering the seeds
Answering the calling of the tide's eternal tune
The phases of the moon, the chambers of the heart, the egg and dart
A small, gray spider spinning in the dark
In spite of all the times the web is torn apart.
~~~~

And I've been waiting in the weeds --waiting for my time to come around again

Hope is floating on the breeze, carrying my soul high up above the ground

I've been keepin' to myself,

Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing you

And though you're with somebody else

align="center">He'll never love you like I do

I'm not sure which I treasure more, the visuals of the ferris wheel and melting ice cream, or the allusions to the types of birds and animals and how they relate to types of people. When I get the the last lines "the egg and dart", "a small gray spider spinning in the dark".... I'm nearly beside myself, wishing that my writing could be so metaphorical, and so telling.

It's a beautiful song. Download it.

What appears to be one thing, is often another...

NO, THOSE AREN'T THE INDIGO GIRLS. A STILL FROM MY FAVORITE MOCKUMENTARY FILM, "DROP DEAD GORGEOUS".... TODAY'S IG SONG IS A MOCKUMENTARY IN THAT SAME VEIN.

In all types of music, I believe the songwriter really thrives when publishing a lyric, and having the audience assume it means something, when it really is all about something else.

The Indigo Girls are far too political for most tastes, and usually open about it in their lyrics. They've come out in song on the administration, the war, immigration, and even Native American rights. Not all of it is pretty....but what satisfaction to be able to air your views in this way.

This last song of mine this week is that type of song. If you hear the song, or read the words, it is ostensibly about a love affair that is ending... where the woman is shedding her last tears. I had a situation like this last year and listened to this song alot. Never saw the video (don't watch VH1, and the Girls are too middle of the road and old for MTV and too pop for CMT) until I caught it on YouTube.

In it, they turn the lovesong into a mockumentary of the election/current administration...complete with their "First Lady" costumes. Enjoy the irony.
