Turn the Radio On

My morning "talk" DJ disappeared after a long stint in Tampa... leaving the morning show in 2012 in order to just do his nationally syndicated political talk show in the afternoon.  He had been on the air almost 7 hours a day before he finally made this difficult decision.

I went into withdrawal...he did a little shock, a whole lot of funny, and both local and national vignettes in the morning hour, with a raucous crew.  I started listening to him in 1996, so it felt as though an old friend disappeared.

I went to I-Pod and CD's in the car after that, but I really craved the talk.  Started trying to find a new FM station that had local flavor and narrowed it down to 2.  The one I listen to most, I listen to because the guy in charge, Orlando...has a real gift.  However, he plays rap-pop, and lately I have found myself humming tunes in the middle of the day that have words in them like:

    "gangsta"      and  "popping tags"

That can't go on.  I'm in human resources.

The most likely candidate for a show is the one that replaced my old radio personality.  I don't mind the guy in charge... but unfortunately, it is a Top 40 musical format.  You know what I hate about top 40?  There are always a couple of songs I like, and then the station kills them by playing them about 5 or 6 times an hour.

One such tune, that I truly love (I would input the You Tube...but am not at my own computer...which broke down; and I can't access the You Tube site from here -- if you do watch it, catch the version that was done live for a show called "Star Academy", which is for a French audience) is from a guy is who is really a talented song writer; a ballad.  He's had quite a few hits that are ballads (which is sort of a dying art form).  The words:

Bruno Mars..... "When I Was Your Man"

"When I Was Your Man"
Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ohh…
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man

Kind of a heart breaker... (I'm a little blue today) but just done beautifully.  If you haven't heard it, try to catch it before Top 40 radio plays it 300,000 times in the month of March.

I don't know if it will embed in a comment. This is the official video - if this doesn't work I'll post the link.

Funny how we get attached to these media personalities. A few years ago, when I started telecommuting some days, I got hooked on the Today Show because of my wife. Matt, Meredith, Al, Ann and Natalie became friends. In 2008 when I visited NYC, there was no question that I would have to visit Rockefeller Plaza and see them all in person during a live show. I got through Meredith's departure and Ann stepping up to her spot. I love Ann. When they canned her last year, that was it. I was done. Went cold turkey. And I have never gone back.

I have found I like the morning radio personalities better but I'm trying not to get attached.

Talk radio: It's just something I've never been able to get into. Then again, give me music, forget the lyrics. I don't need words, whether spoken or sung. Just let me lose myself in the music! :)

Love the responses!

I'm addicted to Morning Joe on TV before I do my talk radio each day, as well.

Thanks Donna! That is the official youtube video... not the funky one on the French show, where Bruno is wearing a wild Hawaiian shirt. I love that one the most because the vocals are so strong on a smaller stage. Be sure and watch one or the other, guys.

Great song--I enjoyed both versions of the viddy. Even though I have a closet full of Hawaiian shirts and like the close-up crooner shots, the piano was more powerful when Bruno played it. I went away humming the Christopher-James-Carson song that Willie took to No. 1 and earned a Grammy, [you were] "Always on My Mind" while hearing the Elvis cover. Due to theme similarities, I had to go listen to Willie and Elvis and Brenda Lee (after I found out she had the first recording of "AoMM.")
I'm on the road a lot so Sirius XM is worth it to me. I get most of my talk radio, music and DJ banter from that smorgasbord of stations when I'm in my vehicle. TedF

Driving to Dunkirk twice a week, I got to listen to a Canadian morning show. It amazed me how they talked about intelligent things, like should kids have cell phones? Restrictions on them? etc. Mostly, I was amazed at the music...it was everything. Rock, pop, tech...something for everyone. Here the stations play their genre and nothing else.
